At the age of 11, in 1984, I got my first Transformer – G1 Skywarp. Starscream was my favorite character, but he was sold out everywhere, so Mom fell back on the closest available toy that also happened to be made in my favorite colors, black and purple. From that moment on, my fate was sealed.
I tossed my Barbie dolls – so much for princesses – and rapidly amassed a collection of 15 Transformers. I started watching Tranzor Z, Voltron, and Robotech, and reading the original Furman run of Transformers UK.
In 1986, I clocked 20 screenings of TF:TM at a second-run theatre, riding my bike 3 miles each way to get there.
In 1987, a friend said to me, “If you’re watching Robotech, you should be watching these instead,” and he gave me unsubbed 3rd-gen copies of the Macross movie, Megazone 23, and the first Bubblegum Crisis.
I’ve been thinking about robots daily ever since.
